Team Coon Creek

Registration & Participation Information

Thank you for your interest in Team Coon Creek! Our team is a family-based group of athletes known for their integrity and standards. Team Coon Creek belongs to the California Youth Shooting Sports Association league (shootcyssa.com), a program for athletes ages 8-23 interested in the shooting sports.

Unlike adult shooting leagues, CYSSA is a program that rewards at the team, squad and individual level of an athlete's performance. Team Coon Creek caters to both recreational and competitive athletes. Athletes make a season-long commitment to participate in practices, regional, state and national tournaments. Athletes are an important member of their squad and expected to be at practices and commit to receiving and adopting coaching advice. They will develop camaraderie with their teammates and serve as a positive role model for others.

We are proud that, unlike other sports, all Team Coon Creek athletes participate in the program - no one sits on the sidelines. As athlete's position on a squad is performance-based. The coaching staff will make ongoing evaluations of athletes and squad them appropriately to maximize their individual development and for the team's success.

Annual athlete participation fees include (but may not be limited to):

Important: All registration is due by February 4th (current year)

  • $185 non-refundable team registration fee per athlete payable to CCYSF. This fee includes:

  • One-time uniform fee for the season

  • Athlete/team liability insurance, team gifts, new coaches, additional expenses necessary to run the team.

  • $35 annual membership to CYSSA

  • You may pay by accessing http://shootcyssa.com/registration-forms and navigate to the Register Your Student Athlete section to complete the registration process.

Coon Creek will begin regular season practices on Tuesdays and Thursdays each week, beginning early January at 6:00 p.m. and continue through mid-June. Each practice will consist of 2 to 4 rounds.

Each Athlete must bring their own ammo and are encouraged to maintain a reasonable amount for competition.

Per round fees: $7 per practice round (25 targets)

Accounting 'On the books": Practice rounds may be prepaid, payable to CCYSF.

Important: All practice and tournament fees must be paid-in-full in advance of a tournament. Athletes will be given opportunities each season to participate in fundraising to help offset cost(s).

CYSSA currently has six (6) regional tournaments scheduled; the cost for each athlete is currently $58 per tournament (subject to change). Tournament fees are due to the team coordinator prior to each tournament or may be prepaid in one payment. For the State and National tournament there will be additional costs announced in early May. The location of each tournament is subject to change. Squads are encouraged to participate in regional tournaments, State tournament, and the US Youth Shooting tournament located in Las Vegas early July. Note: State tournaments require each athlete's participation in a minimum of 3 regional tournaments.

All athletes parents/guardian/chaperone are responsible for their own expenses while traveling and attending regional, State, and National tournaments.

Fundraising:

Team Coon Creek has an administrative charitable foundation: Coon Creek Youth Shooting Foundation (CCYSF) 501(c)3, designed to raise funds helping support Team Coon Creek. CCYSF asks for your help in seeking funds from private companies, individuals, grants, and other organizations willing to help support our athletes. Funds raised may be used for items such as tournament registration fees, practice targets, practice fees, etc. (subject to the direction of the Foundation Board of Directors).

We appreciate your interest in participating on Team Coon Creek and look forward to having you join us.

Team Coon Creek

Practice Expectations

Team Coon Creek has enjoyed great success in competition because of hard working athletes and their dedication to the team. To better one's skills, it is expected that team members will attend all scheduled practices. Team Coon Creek takes great pride in offering athletes the opportunity to compete at many locations in California and Nevada. Shooting is an individual sport, but also a team sport where athletes rely on each other for success. It is necessary squad members practice and learn how to support each other.

Regular season practices are Tuesday and Thursdays starting in January at 6:00 p.m. Part of the team building process is participating with your team in all scheduled practices and competitions. Remember, if your athlete is participating in other sports, we understand busy schedules and will make an effort to work with those schedules.

All Team Coon Creek athletes are expected to show up to practice on time outside of any previous arrangements made. Regular season practice begins at 6:00 p.m. sharp. If you can't make it on time, your athlete may not be squadded with his/her squad. For the safety of all athletes, it is required that everyone come to practices and events with his/her gun, ammunition, eye and ear protection.

All shooters will be responsible for the following:

  • Arriving on time for practice.

  • Being prepared when called to the line with gun, ammunition, eyes, and ears.

  • Picking up shells after completion of practice.

When an athlete knows he/she will miss practice, the athlete must inform a coach via call or text. Competitive athletes who regularly miss practice may be moved to a different squad.

Team Coon Creek

Athlete Code of Conduct

Team Coon Creek is a CYSSA sanctioned program. Target shooting sports are the same as any other sport. Athletes are expected to behave in a way that reflects positive on themselves, their team, and the sport. As a condition of a team membership, every athlete must agree to and abide by the following Code of Conduct.

  • SAFETY IS THE TOP PRIORITY! Unsafe behavior will result in immediate disciplinary action.

  • Every athlete must wear appropriate ear protection and safety glasses when on the firing line.

  • The CYSSA Handbook applies to all athletes and adults associated with Team Coon Creek. See shootcyssa.com to obtain a digital copy of the handbook.

  • Safety regulations PROHIBIT any athlete from resting the muzzle of a firearm on his/her shoe.

  • Profanity, foul language and/or derogatory comments will result in athlete discipline.

  • All athletes must dress appropriately during practice and tournaments. There are to be no bare midriffs, saggy pants, short shorts revealing too much skin, open toe shoes or flip-flops during any practice or tournaments. The CYSSA dress code will be followed during practice and tournaments (review the CYSSA handbook for dress code).

  • Consumption of alcoholic beverages is strictly prohibited.

  • Every athlete must follow all instructions given by a Team Coon Creek coach.

  • Every athlete must act in a fair, courteous, respectful, and sportsmanlike manner. Athletes must never disparage their teammates, coaches, CYSSA officials, or themselves. Athletes will act in a manner that brings credit to Team Coon Creek at all times.

  • Horseplay and other distracting behavior will not be permitted at any time.

  • Every athlete must show up on time for practice and tournaments unless the athlete has notified a coach that they will be absent or tardy.

  • Poor and unbecoming sportsmanship includes but is not limited to: Stomping of feet; aggressively speaking or arguing with anyone; and rude or unbecoming comments to teammates, coaches, or others at the event on or off the shooting line. It is the policy of Team Coon Creek that any athlete who exhibits poor or unbecoming sportsmanship behavior will be subject to disciplinary action. Unsportsmanlike conduct up to and including dismissal from the team will be issued at the discretion of the head coach.

"What to Expect at Tournaments”

All athletes are required to be at the competition ready to go at least one hour prior to the start time of the tournament. This allows for any necessary squad changes, and for early squads to be prepared to compete.

Tournaments will be two rounds (50 targets) shot back-to-back in the morning and 2 rounds in the afternoon. This may vary depending on the host club. Scores are posted throughout the day and shoot-offs (tie-breakers) are conducted after all squads have completed their regular rounds. If your athlete is in the upper scores, they may be in a shoot-off, which means you will need to stay until the end. Although regular tournaments are 100 rounds, bring additional ammo in case an athlete is in a shoot-off.

Team Coon Creek will have one general gathering spot. Shooters need to check in with Coordinating Coach Jaime Denio upon arriving to find out their squad number and approximate time they will shoot their first round.

The coaches will submit squads to the shoot coordinator the week prior to the tournament. These squads are then assigned a random squad number by the host coordinator. Some squads will shoot early in the day, some late. We do not choose squad numbers and they don't necessarily fall in succession.

Athletes are expected to know their squad number and be at the assigned trap house 'on deck' while the prior squad finishes. You are responsible for knowing your squad and when to be at the trap house 'on deck'. Athletes are encouraged to work together to be prepared to take the line. If you are not sure where and what time you need to be at a trap house you can ask your squad leader or a coach.

Athlete awards will be presented at the end of the day after all squads have completed their rounds and all shoot-offs or going to receive an award. Please coordinate with a coach prior to departing. We encourage athletes to stay for the awards ceremony to cheer on their fellow athletes.

Here's to a great season! Please be sure you contact Coach Jaime Denio (916) 517-2055 if you will not be able to attend a tournament that you have signed up for. Feel free to contact any of your coaches should you have any questions, comments, or concerns!

Parent Volunteer Opportunity

Team Coon Creek is successful in part, because of helpful parents/guardians on the team. When a parent/guardian volunteers to keep score during a practice, it enables coaches to keep their focus on helping athletes where necessary. TCC request that parents/guardians volunteer and learn how to score-keep. Additionally, during home tournaments parents/guardians have the opportunity to score-keep and add money back to their athlete's books.
